Counseling For Young Adults

Young adults experience a wide range of challenges as they are working their way from being children to full-fledged adults. The psychotherapy community calls this cohort “emerging adults” and it’s fitting, as so many young adults are like butterflies emerging from their cocoon. Becoming an adult is messy, exhilarating, confusing, scary and so much more.

When young adults need counseling, there can be many reasons why they want to take the plunge. These range from genuine mental health challenges like depression and anxiety to learning to understand their unique brains and how they fit-in as an adult.

The ADHD brain continues changing as people get older, only as young adults, there is more independence and less “doing what Mom or Dad told them to do.” Navigating ADHD behaviors like impulsivity and oversharing with a history of living with ADHD can add to the complexity of adulthood.

As I said before, emerging from the cocoon isn’t easy.

To help, I offer two different counseling services for young adults.

Psychotherapy for Emerging Adults

Because ADHD is often accompanied by anxiety, depression, or learning disabilities, psychotherapy can help. I maintain a private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts where I work with neurodivergent young adults who are dealing with the challenges of ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities and depression.

Counseling for young adults is different from family counseling because the family is often less involved at this stage of life. That said, in many instances, counseling can help kids who are struggling to leave the nest do so with greater agency and personal choice. It’s my hope that the counseling I offer will help my clients discover and develop their strengths, find ways to make friends with their unique brain so they can launch into adulthood with pride and self-reliance.

ADHD Consulting/Coaching for Young Adults

I offer packages of two and four online coaching sessions for emerging adults and their parents to assess your situation, explore new strategies and offer suggestions for the next steps. The focus of this work is on educating young adults about the road ahead so they can make choice with less fear and stress.

Consulting is educational in nature and solution oriented to help you (or your emerging adult child) learn how to launch into their adult life.

This is a powerful time in everyone’s life. And families feel deeply the loss of childhood and empty nesting.  As exciting as it is, it’s also quite bittersweet.

If you would like to consult with me to explore working together, please contact me or reserve your sessions today by purchasing one of the online coaching packages linked to above.
